Nous sommes allรฉs en France

....thank goodness for Google translate :   "We went to France"

Only for the day, a little jolly across to sea from Plymouth to Roscoff.  We took the car, so were able to drive on over to Brest on the western coast, then back again in time for the ferry home.   We did shopping, looked around, enjoyed the journey (on the ferry plus in the car), all in all it was a good visit.

I took photos along the way, so sit back and travel along with our journey...

Going over was a night sailing...here we are queueing to get off the ship

It took ages to get through the customs check-out line and a load of bicycles cheated, so we had to wait even longer!
but eventually we got underway.  Look, we're driving on the wrong side of the road.
(I have to admit my husband is very good at coping with that)

Difficult to see, but there were workers in the fields cutting and loading what looked like cabbages.  All seemed very labour intensive in our minds.
 open countryside

then we reached Brest - they have trams,  l๐Ÿ‘€k overhead wires

it was a bit of a wait to get a picture of one though, but one came along

the helicopter isn't used anymore, but guess it made a place to store it

They do have a cable car in the town, that crosses the river.  I so wanted to have a go on it, but unfortunately it was having an annual maintenance.  There's husband crossing the road to read the notice about it (think he was secretly relieved it wasn't going, he doesn't like them)

the arrow in the next picture shows where the cable car goes on the other side of the river, it actually goes into a building, very strange!

A metal tree and very realistic, considering it was made of metal

difficult to see, but on the pillars of the bridge, you might be able to see some Art (I'm not inclined to call it graffiti as such, although obviously painted in that way)

and under the bridge you will see another small road bridge.  Yes, cars were crossing.  We didn't see it in action but it lifts up when boats need to go through.  Very unusual, never seen anything like that before.

We ventured to their supermarkets and I HAD to take a photo of the trolley-bay.
I think "Chariots" sounds so much nicer
Our day was nearly over as we had to get back to Roscoff for the ferry back home.
We drove through the town of Saint Pol-de-Leon (which has the highest church steeple in Brittany....
I knew you really wanted to know that!)

I did take the opportunity to sketch, mostly at the ferry terminal and on the boat itself....

waiting at the ferry terminal....we were there about an hour before sailing, so it gave me a chance to draw
Two French policemen....AND they had tazers and guns!!!!
not a particularly good likeness, but this was a Morgan sports car...and I got it drawn/painted before we had to move onto the boat.

Prepare yourselves for a Rant....We had a cabin again on the return journey, which gave us some respite from People ๐Ÿคช

but on any journey you have to Mingle and see what's going on. So we found a "Quiet area/Reading room" - NOT.  WHY DO PEOPLE NOT READ NOTICES AS THEY WALK INTO AN AREA.  We had a group of two couples chatting LOUDLY, and a family of ("edna's" as we refer to them) taking up space at the entrance, with kids spilling all over the place grrrrr!

Thank goodness for sketching....I could concentrate on that....

although most people were reasonable and looked out to sea, or read
some gave up and wandered off
this couple were quietly playing a game of cards
or dosing

this older gentleman read a book

and then

went to sleep

which by default gave me a good opportunity to draw him

then finally we were back in England

My summary:

Regardless of annoying fellow passengers, we had a really good visit to France and I would do it all again (not the annoying people part though)!!!

 ~ au revoir ~

Whimsical paintings

I've recently been doing some whimsy-style paintings, inspired by friends who have recently moved to Devon and have shared pictures online of their chickens, amongst various other photos.  Anyway, they inspired me, and having asked permission to use the pics, I set to having a bit of fun.  (as a Thank You to our friend, she will be receiving the collection of paintings to keep).

This was from a photo taken of her chickens in the snow - plus
keep in mind, these friends have just moved down this way and are doing work on their house renovating it

The husband has a 2CV

This wasn't so much from photo ref. but more from imagination - but I know eggs will need to be collected and could just envisage one of the chickens doing this!

....and this was an occasion when a 'visitor' decided to sit on the bird table!

Good on him - the husband was helping hang the washing out -

Seems like they have very opinionated chickens.

~I'm having fun turning their photos into paintings with a comical twist ~
